  • A Matsutake mushroom picker waits as a buyer grades his harvest of mushrooms in Crescent Lake Junction, Oregon. Each mushroom is graded between 1-5, with "1s" being sold for the most money. Prices for these prized specimens fluctuate depending on the demand of the Japanese market. A good picker can easily average several hundred dollars per day. On this day, the picker was paid an average of $150 for each basketful.

  • Matsutake mushroom pickers bring their harvests to buyers in Crescent Lake Junction, Oregon. Dozens of brokers in makeshift booths bargain with pickers over the best price per pound. Dollar amounts vary widely, depending on the quality of the mushroom and the demand of the Japanese market. A good picker can easily average several hundred dollars per day. In 1993, matsutake prices peaked at $600 per pound, but they normally average between $10 Ð 30.  At the nightly auction stations, as much as $6,000 in cash can change hands in an hour.

  • Matsutake mushroom pickers check receipts and cash after selling their harvests in Crescent Lake Junction, Oregon. Because all of the transactions are in cash, everyone is fearful that the IRS will be notified of the unreported income. Each day, over $200,000 is reportedly filtered though a tiny bank in a nearby town. Each night, trucks leave Crescent Lake Junction hauling cargoes worth six figures. State and Federal tax authorities recently initiated an inquiry into the money the harvest has generated over the last two years.

Competition for the matsutake is so fierce that many pickers carry weapons to protect themselves and their valuable mushrooms. Despite the best efforts of local officials, violence has been known to erupt during the harvest. In 1996, The Oregonian reported that five shootings occurred in the Mushroom Camp during the six weeks that it was open.
