Fearful of being robbed, a matsutake mushroom picker arms himself with a gun in the Willamette National Forest of Oregon. Competition for the matsutake is so fierce that many pickers carry weapons to protect themselves and their valuable mushrooms. Despite the best efforts of local officials, violence has been known to erupt during the harvest. In 1996, The Oregonian reported that five shootings occurred in the Mushroom Camp during the six weeks that it was open.
