Jordin Tootoo is the first Inuit to make it into the National Hockey League. Drafted by the Nashville Predators, and now playing for the New Jersey Devils, Tootoo comes from Rankins Inlet in the Northwest Territory of Canada near the Arctic Circle. Known as living "a thousand miles from concrete," he and his family rely on hunting and fishing to live a modest life that is in stark contrast to the high-rolling lifestyle most professional athletes crave elsewhere. Tootoo and his family are salt-of-the-earth people, kind and respectful, tough and resilient. I loved this assignment. Photographed for Sports Illustrated
